My idealism And Concern
Incoprates The Following Important Issues
-
Smokers with a chronic
mental illness, be it schizophrenia (up to 90% of these smoke), depression, weight issues, bipolar, anxiety, social phobia, compulsive
disorder amongst many other types of mental disorders, needing medication to keep well, would benefit in this case, to give
up the habit altogether. The alternative is potentially serious primary health conditions which can become worse,
such as sinus blockage, a productive cough, decreased fitness levels, smelly breath, social exclusion to non smoking
public areas (including cars), nicotine stained fingers.
-
It would be
good to have further doctor involvement to quit by monitoring, information sharing for the mentally ill client, liason
with the mental health clinics to give help this hugely disadvantaged group, economically, socially and isolated due
to stigma.
-
A 24 hr service, not unlike QUIT, with National wide Help Lines, but more particularly
for mental health consumers who could benefit greatly. There could be a referral service to mental health
services within the area, talking the person giving up through a step by step program, and positive counselling, showing that
the person needing it will know that giving up smoking is very much possible, no matter how many times the individual has
tried before.
|
|
Note: 40% of smokers have some sort of chronic
illness mental health problems. While the average smoker is quiting, people with mental illness aren't!
These people are one of the most needy sectors
of Australian society. And also the most humble.
Any person on a disability allowance shouldn't
be neglected. The economic value of Australia in terms of decrease in health problems would be a very significant improvement.
Sweeping the dirt under the rug isn't going to work
any more!
Here are some links for you to read. They
all relate to this issue, and it's a huge issue.
