Smoking
Cessation
There
are two main ways of giving up - either using proven medication (which doubles the chance of never smoking again on every
attempt) or going ‘cold turkey’.
Nicotine
replacement therapies are used to give nicotine to a person throughout the day, instead of them getting it from tobacco. Used
regularly during the day for several months, this can help control cravings caused by withdrawal from smoking. Advice should
be sought from your GP, pharmacist or specialist smoking cessation service. Adding psychological support while using this
therapy improves the chances of stopping smoking further.
Bupropion
(Zyban) is a tablet taken daily for several months, which reduces withdrawal symptoms and cravings. Ask your GP about this
medication, as it is available on prescription only.
People
who have only been smoking a short period may wish to try the ‘cold turkey’ method for their first attempt.
NOTE
: please check with your doctor first before using Zyban.
